MTB Torque Wrench – For Mountain Bike

Regardless of the type of bike you ride, the more you use it, the more maintenance it requires. No matter how cheap or expensive it is, you need to take care of it, and it’s also about your safety.

In the case of MTBs or mountain bikes, the use of a torque wrench to adjust their moving parts is essential because off-road riding can quickly take it out of service if you do not maintain it properly.

Especially in wet and muddy conditions, it is important to keep your bike at least reasonably clean and to keep its moving parts well adjusted and lubricated. A well-maintained MTB performs better and its components will last longer.

In dry periods during the summer months, some trails may develop a layer of fine dust, which combined with the chain oil produces an abrasive paste that affects and deteriorates your mountain bike components. Using a ‘dry’ Teflon chain lubricant can help reduce this phenomenon.

Below you can see some models of MTB torque wrenches sold on Amazon:

Guide to Buying a Bicycle Torque Wrench

There are certain aspects to consider. If use is limited to adjusting the height of the saddle and fitting new handlebars, it is probably OK to use a pre-established 5 Nm torque wrench.

If you are going to do other things, such as changing the lower brackets or perhaps mounting an expensive set of power meter pedals, invest a little more in a suitable torque wrench.

It is also worth checking whether the torque wrench you are thinking of buying is reversible, i.e. whether it can be adjusted to provide the required torque in a left and right hand movement. Anything with a left-handed thread (pedals, brackets) will require this.

In our opinion we do not recommend that you buy a second-hand torque wrench that is for sale, as it is a very delicate precision tool.

The Torque Wrench in the Maintenance of your Bicycle

After having used your bike for some time you will have to tighten its bolts and nuts with a torque wrench. This is a precision tool used to tighten them to the correct level of tension. Most bicycle components indicate the proper level of tension somewhere near the bolt.

Critical components that should always be adjusted using a torque wrench include handlebar and seat post clamps, front derailleur band clamps, and chainring bolts.

Bicycle Torque Wrench

Plate pins are even more critical when installed in a spider/crank based power meter. In the case of mountain side travel, the pivots and suspension components and strut clamps are also important.

Carbon Bike Torque Wrench

If your bike is made of carbon fiber, most of its bolts have certain specifications. On the saddle post clamp or on the handlebar stem, you can see a 7 Nm or 5 Nm. What do those numbers mean?  “Nm” means Newton meter, which is the metric unit of measure of torque used by the torque wrench.

Torque is a force that produces twisting or turning on the body to which it is applied. To turn the bolt in your bike’s seat post clamp, you must apply a specific amount of force, say 5 Nm. To do that, you need a bicycle torque wrench, a precision tool.

Consequences of not using it

The consequences of over-tightening the carbon components can be catastrophic. A seat post that continues to slide chronically even after being tightened several times is often the consequence of having applied too much torque to the bolts to tighten the clamp, which damaged the carbon.

We recommend that you apply carbon paste to the clamping surfaces of your seat post and handlebar clamps. This paste is an abrasive gel that aids in grip and creates more friction between the contact surfaces of the components.

In fact, this friction can reduce the torque needed to hold components securely in place, which minimizes possible damage to carbon parts.

An experienced mechanic usually has a good idea of how much force to apply to a bolt or nut, but for the weekend bike rider or non-professional mechanic, a torque wrench is very important.

Remember that components that are too tight can damage the carbon and even break the bolt. If you encounter potholes or bumps in the road during your ride, you may run the risk of the handlebar or stem slipping down.

Should I use a Torque Wrench for my Bike ?

It’s definitely a very good idea. Not using a torque wrench increases the risk of breaking a bolt, or even a delicate carbon component. In the case of a handlebar, this can be dangerous; and if it is proven that you over-tightened a bolt and that caused the fracture, then your chances of a warranty claim may be negated.

Some mechanics may disregard the use of the torque wrench and tighten the bolts according to their own estimation, as they are considered to be experienced, however this can be risky, because if something goes wrong you may lose the warranty of the product.

What sets of Bicycle Torque Wrenches are Available ?

Below you can see some models:

There are many different styles of torque wrenches: the basic and oldest, yet least reliable option is the beam torque wrench. This type is cheaper but also heavier.

The most expensive and sophisticated option on sale is the digital or electronic torque wrench in which a desired level of torque can be pre-set and additionally provides us with a downloadable history of its use.

The two most Common Styles of Torque Wrenches Used on Bicycles

Preset torque wrench looks like a normal allen wrench, with a handle. It will tighten the bolt to the ideal tension. They are lightweight and easy to carry, as well as highly accurate since they cannot be adjusted.

A click torque wrench often comes as part of a rachet and die set. These come with assorted tips. The user selects the correct size part and then sets the required torque level (often using a dial on the handle). The unit will “click” when the correct torque is reached.

Having torque wrenches preset to 4-6 Nm (the common tensions used on bicycles) is a good idea. However, it would be difficult to have one for every ideal torque in the right size, and they are usually achieved up to about 10 Nm, so you may need a more sophisticated torque wrench if you are doing more than just adjusting the saddle height.

There are several online stores where you can buy a bicycle torque wrench in addition to Amazon, such as Leroy Merlin, Aliexpress, Mammoth, Norauto and Mercado Libre.
